- Connection:
- --Basic: 28.8k modem, and 28 kbps minimum connection speed from your
- Internet Service Provider
- --VQ: 56.6k modem, and 40 kbps minimum connection speed from your

- 2) GETTING STARTED WITH FIRETALK
- ================================================================
- This section gives you quick information on creating an account and using Firetalk's
- main communications features.

- a) Registering and Getting Started
- ----------------------------------------------
- The first step to using Firetalk is creating an account with a nickname and password.
- You probably created an account before downloading the Firetalk application, but can create
- extra accounts at any time by opening the File menu and clicking Login as New User.

- To log on, launch Firetalk from the desktop shortcut or from your Programs menu. If the
- application does not connect automatically, click the red Connect to Firetalk button at
- the bottom of the Console. The first time you connect, you will be prompted to enter a
- nickname and password, or to create a new account.

- The Welcome Menu appears when you first log on. It provides links to sources of
- information about using various Firetalk features.

- b) Console- Communications and Contacts tabs
- -----------------------------------------------------------
- The Console is the main Firetalk window and contains all of your communication and contact
- management functions. The Console contains two tabs, Communication and Contacts.
-
- The Contacts tab allows you to manage your contacts list. You can add or delete a contact,
- arrange your contacts into groups, view a contact's profile information, invite a friend to
- learn about Firetalk, and block a user by using the buttons on this tab.

- The Communications tab shows you which of your contacts are currently online and offline.
- Use the buttons on this tab to place calls, send instant messages, and send voice mail
- messages.

- At the bottom of both Console tabs are buttons to access Firetalk forums, Talk & Surf,
- and your Message Log.

- c) Calling Other People and Receiving Calls
- -----------------------------------------------------------
- To place a Firetalk call, you can:
- --Click the name in your contact list and the Call button from the Communications tab in
- your Console.
- --Click the phone icon next to the name or double-click the name to open the
- Contact Options window. Firetalk opens your Call window and sends an invitation to your
- contact.

- When you receive a call, you hear a phone-like ring, and the Firetalk Pager displays the
- caller's name. To answer the call, click the Accept button (green check mark) on the
- Pager or press the Enter key on your keyboard.

- If you want to call someone who is not on your contacts list, see the section below
- entitled Adding People to your Contact List.

- To end a call, click the Hang Up button in the Call window.

- d) Joining Forums
- ------------------------
- Firetalk provides a wide range of forums that you can join to talk, send instant messages,
- or just listen to others speaking on your favorite topics. To join a forum, click the Open
- Forums List button on the Console. Takes you to a Web page containing a list of forum
- categories, including Computers and Technology, Games, Family and more. Click the category
- you are interested in to see a list of forums. To join a forum, click the forum name.

- To join a hidden forum, click Join Hidden Forum, then enter the exact name of the forum
- you want to join.

- To join a password-protected forum, you must be invited by a forum participant or obtain
- the proper password.

- e) Adding People to Your Contact List
- ----------------------------------------------------
- To add someone to your contacts list, from the Console, click the Contacts tab and the
- Add User button. This opens the Find Firetalk User dialog box so that you can search for
- the person you wish to call in the Firetalk database. Search by Firetalk ID number,
- User Name, Email, First Name, Last Name, or any combination of these; for quick searching,
- only enter one or two of these fields. Click Find to search the database. When you have
- received the results of your search, select the person you want to add and the Add User
- button.

- f) Placing Calls on Hold
- --------------------------------
- When you are in a call and want to place the call on hold, click the Hold button.
- Calls that are on hold are indicated by a yellow light, active calls by blue light.
- To accept the call, click the Pick Up button.

- NOTE: You cannot place forums on hold.

- g) Sending and Receiving Instant Messages and Voice Mail
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Instant messages are quick text messages sent to any user online or offline. Voice mail is
- a sound recording that you can send to any user online or offline.

- To send an instant message or voice mail, click the name in your contacts list and either
- the Instant Message button or Voice Mail button on the Communications tab of the Console.

- If you are sending an instant message, type your message and click the Send button. You can
- format your message using the customization menu to select fonts, formatting, and text size.
-
- If you are sending voice mail, click the Record button and record your message. Click the
- Stop button to stop recording. Click the Play button to play back your message. To send
- your message click Send.

- You can send an instant message or voice mail to several people simultaneously, by
- clicking the Add/Remove Recipient button in the Voice Mail window or Instant Message
- window, then selecting from the pop-up list of contacts.

- When you receive an instant message or voice mail, an icon flashes next to the name of the
- sender in your contact list. Double-click the sender's name to receive your message.

- The Message Log keeps all sent and received messages, and records the date and time of
- calls, forums, and chat sessions. You can review instant messages or play back voice mail
- by clicking the View Message Log button on the Console.

- Firetalk Website, where you will find a complete User Guide providing detailed instructions
- for using all of Firetalk's features, and a Troubleshooting Guide to help you solve any
- problems you might encounter.

- questions. You can contact Customer Service by email or instant message, or by visiting the
- Firetalk Support forum. For details about how to contact us, open the Help menu on the
- Firetalk Console, and click Firetalk Online Help.
